Assault Police Report - It's been almost a week since a large group reportedly assaulted a man and his son during a public family outing. No suspects have been identified in the incident, which some are calling a "hate crime," a term police say is incorrect.
What is not disputed is that during First Friday, the group attacked the family at Wilson Park in Florence. The victim, a white male, told police he would pick up his 14-year-old at the park that night. He said a group of 20 to 30 black teens were returning to their vehicle when they attacked the teen in the back of the head. The man said he was trying to protect his son when the group attacked him, causing facial injuries. They then allegedly smashed the rear window of the car with his wife and young child inside.

The man said his attacker taunted him with racial slurs when he hit him. The police acknowledged this, but said it was not a hate crime. Police are formally investigating the attack.

The insults were not mentioned in the police report, but police were aware of the allegations, Harris said.

The case was officially listed as a third-degree felony assault and a third-degree criminal mischief for the broken window. Both are violations.
Florence police released the first half of the original police report, which is public. Harris said it listed the incident as a second-degree felony, but that the listing was a mistake by the reporting officer.
